Abbey Scone
A moment to unwind in the city.
In Arakawa, Tokyo, スコーン専門店 Abbey is a takeaway-only shop for scones that let the ingredients shine without putting sweetness first, alongside jam. Discover classic and tea-flavoured scones, and how clotted cream makes for a lovely tea-time pairing.
01 / ABOUT THE PLACE
In the residential streets of Arakawa 4-chome, the baked treats at スコーン専門店 Abbey are an appealing choice when you want to savour the flavour of the flour and the aroma of butter, rather than sweetness taking centre stage. Made with Lakanto instead of sugar, along with grass-fed butter and Hokkaido-grown wheat, the scones have a simple appeal and a satisfyingly substantial, firm bake.
The display case holds several varieties, changing daily or with the seasons. Alongside the classic scone, there may be Uva tea, masala chai or hojicha, as well as savoury options made with cheddar cheese. The classic is a pleasingly simple choice, while scones infused with tea or spices release an inviting aroma. Choosing a combination is part of the fun.
Once home, warm a takeaway scone briefly in a toaster to bring out its fragrant, lightly crisp exterior and soft, fluffy centre. Clotted cream adds a milky richness, while the homemade jams are packed with citrus and fruit flavours. Split a warmed scone in half, add a generous spoonful of cream and bright, fruity jam, and a tea break at home becomes something special.
This small, quiet shop is takeaway-only, but you can step inside and take your time choosing from the display. Payment is accepted in cash, by major credit cards, PayPay and transit IC card. It is also easy to pick up a treat while out for a walk.
